“Waterproof” is not a complete product brief. Buyers need to define the expected weather, wearing time, comfort level and price position before selecting a shell and construction method.
01
Start with the weather the product must handle.
Light shower or sustained rain?
The use case changes the level of water resistance, seam treatment and coverage required.
Warm, mild or cold?
Temperature guides whether the garment needs mesh, soft lining or insulation.
Short walk or long outdoor use?
Longer wear places more weight on breathability, mobility and rubbing points.
02
Ask what the shell feels like as well as what it blocks.
Soft, crisp, lightweight or structured
Acceptable movement sound for the target pet
Coating, membrane or laminated construction
How the fabric supports movement and fit
Availability, lot control and appearance when wet
Cleaning method and performance after washing

03
Resolve seams, closures and visibility together.
- 01
Choose the seam strategy.
Discuss which seams face direct rain and whether binding, sealing or another treatment is required.
- 02
Protect closure areas.
Review plackets, zipper placement, hook-and-loop zones and openings where water may enter.
- 03
Place reflective details deliberately.
Position visibility elements where they remain visible in motion and after size grading.
04
Review the sample under realistic conditions.
Check mobility, noise, coverage, harness access, closure security and drying behavior. Record which material and construction version was tested before approving any change for quotation or production.
